It is rather amusing to watch how a computer game character materialises in to very tangible form of white, smooth plastic. A colleague of mine asked me to print this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1258474

After about one centimetre of printing the brim started to lift. I grabbed the glue gun and glued brim to the build platform in the process of printing. Now my platform is a sticky mess...

In general I would not recommend buying a 3D printer. They are expensive, difficult to operate, noisy and require a long printing time. It is much easier and cheaper to order something printed for you. There are many printer owners who offer custom print services.
The only excuse for owning a 3D printer is if you create your own designs. Which I'm sure you will satisfy.
